On ne peut expresser bien en français la tristesse d'apprendre que mon amis Charles est mort. In English, which Charles spoke with such elegance, let me say he was an unforgettable presence in my two years in Geneva in the early 1990s. He was a true raconteur, a man of principle, a marvelous tour guide, gracious host, and in business a valued colleague and, when necessary, worthy adversary. I remember his love of his family, his country and his God. He was sweet and sometimes stern, yet at heart very, very kind. By coincidence, he will be interred on my birthday, so I will always have a specific occasion to remember him - as well as remembering him whenever I think about Geneva. His many friends in the United States remember him fondly and will miss him. I regret that my next visit to Switzerland will not include a long talk, and perhaps a day tour, with this wonderful man.
