Helmut was one of my heroes. I will especially remember his kindness & generosity. His distinction as a scholar was extraordinary; he achieved so much through his sheer joy of learning & love of getting history right. He was endlessly curious, ever enthusiastic, & boundlessly generous with his time & attention, even as he balanced all his other duties. Helmut was a giver. It’s a measure of love for others to be so engaged. For that we honor him & love him back.
